What is total compensation?
Total compensation (TC) is everything an employer pays you over a year — base salary + bonus + equity (RSU/options) + employer 401(k) match + benefits value. For tech roles in 2026, equity often makes up 30-50% of TC at senior levels. Compare offers on TC, not base.
How are RSUs valued in total comp?
Standard practice: divide the total RSU grant value by the vesting period (typically 4 years). A $400K RSU grant vesting over 4 years = $100K/year added to TC. Year 1 actual vest is often less due to 1-year cliffs (you get $0 until month 12).
Should I include benefits in total compensation?
Yes — health insurance, PTO value, life/disability insurance, equipment stipends, education budgets all count. Ballpark $8K-$15K/year for typical US tech employer. Levels.fyi convention is to NOT include benefits in TC and report base+bonus+equity only.
